"Don't Forget to Breathe..."
Good life reminder ... For everything- running, stretching, working, loving, etc - don't.forget.to.breathe.
But- Enough of the life.lessons for the day.
So- todays training-
Warm up mile up from ps 9 at 86th st over to the Great Hill - that lovely steep hill that leads into a speed track.
4 hard, 4 easy, we're told--
So go hard for 1, and take it easy for 1 - 4 times. Equals 8 laps.
I ran w the 10minute pacer but thought to roll with the 930-- but with the knee funkiness that I've had going on, I figure- fastest of the slower than slowest of the fastest...
The coach running w that group was the one that I did these laps w last time- the one that's got to be at least 70 years old and a speed demon!
So - took it easy, sped up into a good hard pace that felt good so I could still breathe and then rolled with it.
Our final warm-down was the mile back to the school- the great hill I found is on 105th st- so at least now I know where I was....
Saturday we run the half!! Let's go TFK NY10!

Wet grass equals wet sneakers
I wasn't going to training yesterday due to rain - but this morning I buckled up and went out for a bit this morning. I hit the trail at the park but there were some spots blocked by fallen trees that haven't yet been cleared up. I was still nervous about the trail since I hadn't run it since that little fall of mine, but it was all good.
I've officially registered for the Grete's Half this weekend which I'll be running as our normal Saturday training. Check it out - and come do some cheering!
http://www.nyrr.org/races/2010/r1002x00.asp
Our final 20mi run is OCT 16 out in Jersey... Its getting so close! Race day is NOV 7!
FUNDRAISING UPDATES!
The good news is - we raised a bit of cash on Friday...
I'm waiting to hear on venue amounts before I announce the final number.... I dont know if it'll put us over, but lets hope!!

Major moves routing: 4 bridges, 3 boroughs, all in 1 morning...
We went out for 20 miles today-
Didn't know what the routing was going to be- just told to show up at Queensboro Bridge to start by 630. (I was late thanks to the MTA...smh, but caught my group)
We were told this: run the queensboro, go to roosevelt island and back, and then back to city for the last 10 miles of the actual marathon route.
Um. Sounds easy right? Sure.
Start time: 7:02am
So - we hit the 59th st bridge. Over that. Queens- down some street to another street that leads into another bridge that takes u into Roosevelt Island- down a ton of stairs and AROUND the island.
Sidenote: the beauty of running a hometown marathon, is that u get to discover things that you wouldn't normally. The last time I was in Roosevelt Island was middle school (shout out ps122q Academy!) W a crew of folks I rolled with. My grandfather took me and my bro out for some boss carnival out there and i met my friends. I'm unsure how many of them may read this but Patrick definitely had spaghetti pre rollercoaster and hurled immediately after. Sigh, memories. Lol!
Its changed over the years, but still cute. For those of u that wanna check the island out- F train goes there. U don't have to run ;)
So- around the island, back up the stairs- over the bridge (that's bridge 2, twice) back thru astoria over to the queensboro (that's bridge 1, twice) and into the city--
We were to run UP 1st ave all the way thru harlem to the Bronx. All the way over twd Willis bridge (Bridge 3) over, under and thru the BX for a mile before back into Manhattan on the Madison Ave Bridge (bridge 4).
We crossed the Bronx at 940am. I had no watch, but noticed a big clock.
"Oh and then jus straight down 5th ave. 5 and a half miles" we were told by one of our fellow runners.
Whew, sure!
We felt it by mile 9. Yikes.
Grabbed some gatorade pre the madison ave bridge and kept it moving.
Down 5th ave, museum mile and into Central Park. We had to end at Tavern on the Green and figured just take the loop but with all the people out- gorgeous day, marathon season, everyone in training- we got kinda confused at one point and thought we were lost.
Asking a fellow TFK runner, she was like, oh- u need to go around another loop. Huh!!? After all this?? It didn't sound right so I'm looking thru the park at the buildings to try to identify where we were. One of the beautiful things of knowing ur skyscrapers. I knew the Time Warner building from working over there as well as having trained the large loop for SF08. I knew something was up- we couldn't have been going the wrong way...
We figured it out and kept going around by Central Park South when the same runner came back around: "Sorry guys, I gave u the wrong directions..." *#%*¤@!?? I'd have been TIGHT if we kept going and did an additional loop! Anyway- made it to tavern on the green in one painful piece.
Wrap time: 11:12am.
One of the coaches was telling a group to get some protein in their systems stat- and that chocolate milk would be the best... As if I needed another reason for choco milk:: score! I'd heard similarly in previous training, so I'm not complaining!
Main Coach burst our bubble by telling us the routing is a difficult 18 route- but it felt hard enough. Beautiful day to kick it, but to run that long in 75-83 degrees is not fun. Plus stairs bridges n boroughs- I think we did enough.
Next week, we eat up Greta's Half in Central Park... Who's coming in their "Let's go Team Is" shirts!???
Lol!

Train over bridges...
I rode into the city on a subway (that took forEVER- only to realize it wasn't going to stop where it was supposed to, when I needed it to)- damn u MTA on super early AM weekends! (Who's letting me crash in city pre-marathon day??)
Only to run across another bridge: queensboro is our starting point!
More to come...

Clementines for Good Health...
The Wednesday post didn't go up as expected since I definitely didn't transfer trains, ended up walking home from further than I needed to, got caught in the early beginnings of a thunderstorm and then definitely showered and passed out.
I wanted to explain column runs so hopefully this works--
So we ended up in teams and the object is that as you run around the bridal path with your group in a straight line - the last person jets up to the front and becomes the lead and over and over.
We started off w a team of 10--
So looks like this:
a b c d e f g h I j
Which turns into
J a b c d e f g h I
And then
I j a b c d e f g h
U get it--
So ur running alongside a running line like
I j a b c d e f g
{--- h .... ....
Trying to get to the front.
It takes a bit longer w a longer line, so eventually we ended up splitting into two teams, but we lost a one along the way so it became 4 of us- which makes for much more switching-- and can get super tiring.
But it was good! Definitely keeps u in line and makes u keep a pace, but then speed up every once in a while--
But I definitely felt like I was in boot camp. Left right, left right!

In case u were wondering-
Its still dark. Moons out.
Folks comin home when ur leaving out-
Early AM Runners and folks trying to get home from a long night on the street.
Hustlin up to get to the train to head twd Queensboro Bridge...

Central Park At Night Or... Bridal Path for Easy Knees...
Today was an easy run day- two laps on the bridal path- 3.7 mi around each. Many of the folks on Team ran 14 miles the day before (training moved to Sunday for Yom Kippur)
And we met the winner of the NY Marathon from last year, Meb Keflezighi. He wished us luck.
He's an Olympic runner for US as well- the coaches were pretty stoked.
I left starving! Made the mistake of eating an hour before training... No good on the stomach, but I hadn't eaten like I should have in general for the day.
Things I need to work on to take care of self.
Anyway- fundraising emails are going back out- we only have a few weeks left! While the marathon isn't until NOV- the moneys DUE a MONTH before. Its the most anxiety driven thing.
The running- I'm ready. the marathon- I'm ready. 40thousand people thru nyc streets? I'm ready.
Gettin this money up!!?? I don't know. I have over 500 followers on one and over 1k 'friends' on another and ... I need more impact!
$1 a mile. And a dream. Let's get this up... http://bit.ly/bW6xmN

More distance, and reflective moments...
To support: http://www.runwithtfk.org/Member/PublicPage/1012
Ran this past Saturday--
I have a really hard time running long distance by myself. Anything over 5 miles a buddy would be nice because its too easy to stop when you're by yourself.
I did the same route as last week - a shorter version since this week they had us down for 15 miles. This time though, I ended up trying to take the Manhattan Bridge, since its slightly closer - so up Fulton, Down Flatbush and over the bridge. I couldnt exactly remember the routing since it was a little difference, so I had to run east/south through chinatown to find the FDR and then loop around the bottom of Manhattan, through Battery Park and up the West Side to 72nd St - I opted against the large set of stairs up to the street level and double backed to hit a nice long ramp before trying to find a subway on the way home.
It was an easier day, less soreness, so I'll have to get back up to higher miles in the upcoming weeks...
Considering I missed the other week recap - its below...
Sept 11:

Sept 11 training - we did 18 miles. It was a melancholy kinda day for me so I was supposed to write and just never got the chance to. (Ran right into Fashion Week and with clients in town, it was hard to catch time.)
My baby brother was born August of 01. That makes him 9 this year. Besides being the love of my life, we call him our miracle baby. Because my mom was on maternity leave on 9.11, we're glad to still have her with us. She worked for Deustche Bank, building 4.

I spent a lot of time over there as a kid, so its always a time of reflection and thanks.
Before we ran, one of the coaches remarked that of the people who's bios went into the NY Times, those who ran the NY Marathon all had it in their 200 word bio- it was that big an accomplishment for them.
When we ran across the Brooklyn Bridge- I noticed suddenly that the traffic had come to a complete stop... I had no idea why, and as creepy as it was, in my head, I wondered what people thought as they come across a bridge...
I found out later in the day that there was a jumper. "...you never know, it being 9/11 and all..." Said the girl who told us.
I also found out a friend of a client had been hit the eve before by a drunk driver.
So not to be a downer, but it was kind of a quiet day.
I came home and hit the juice bar and super market. Definitely pulled the ice bath together. Sat in fully clothed w a tshirt on, ate a banana and talked on the phone. I followed coach's advice about the soap. Didn't help immediately but it did help...
So next week - maybe we'll go long again. I'm looking forward to the next few weeks.
But the Money is the MOTIVE! I can't officially run with Team for Kids until this money's up...2K to GO!
so in closing - PLEASE DONATE! I can't save the world, but I can help start somewhere...

Thanks!

Lesson of the day: When u fall, get back up again... Couple scraped knees never stopped anyone.
This morning leisure jog turned into a trip and fall. Considering the last run was a long one (post coming soon) we were advised to try and stay off the concrete.
So I decided to run the little trail around the park. Its a small trail and I'd noticed a lot of twigs, rocks and tree knots but figured I'd be careful. The final piece, when I was just about to wrap the trail to hit concrete again- ROCK!
Hands first, both knees scraped up- but I'm checking if alls in order. A girl I run with had a nasty fall last week and sprained her ankle so I was immediately checking everything. Seemed all good so back up again. The parks and rec guy was like, "don't give up!" (Cue Rob Schneider: 'You can DO it!') And I walked it off and tried to jog again but my knee HURT. It wasn't the scrape. So- home and easy...
I have to run sprints tomorrow w my girl k in the park so- be easy today and attack em tomorrow.
Lesson of the day: Scraped knees never stopped anyone. When you run a new trail, you may get new perspective, but watch out for hurdles along the way, even when you can see the finish.

There's a Rock in my Shoe... Ouch.
Today we routed up to the Track at Great Hill for speed training- which involved a warm up mile there and back. We'd have speed lap runs up on the track.
My right calf has been super tight all day and my knee was starting to hurt so I was a little nervous but decided to find a pace that worked and felt good and roll with it...
So- the drill was - 2 fast, 1 slow, 4 times. Confused yet? 3 laps, 4 rounds. First 2 would be threshold pace (75-80 pct of ur mile pace, aka faster than norm) and then recovery jog for the 3rd. About 12 laps total.
Our Coach is this elderly lady Mary that could run you ragged - she had us all trailing her! I promise you she's gotta be 70+. (She's dope, she knows it.)
Times:
3:11
3:40
3:30
3:19
The first time around definitely felt rough, like we were running way too fast. I learned about pacing quick when I did San Fran as starting off too fast meant I'd end up with chest pains and a hard time breathing.
Coming back down felt like it took way longer than the way up, but we also ran downhill prior to hill and then up on the way back.
Not ever an easy feat, but as you keep doing it, you somehow tend to get better.
So...
I ran my miles...Did you hit the donate button yet? $100 a day campaign still going strong!! :)

run, run, and run some more...
So that's the name of the game. You want to run a marathon? RUN.
That's really what everyone's been telling me. "Ok, cool, go run a bunch of miles."
Its pretty true though. Its you and yourself out there on the road. Legs, feet, arms, all working one unit to get tyou through it. No team to rely on if you're having a bad day to help get you through a game, no coach to motivate you. Just you and an open road.
However, training with a team is helpful. This past Wednesday we had hill-training, something I was pretty familiar with thanks to San Fran training in 08. After the "Welcome our newest Member..." piece, (Thanks, I'm a Scorpio, I like boys with fresh cuts and long walks in the city on summer nights...lol) I met a girl who kept my pace and remembered why it was so important to train with someone. The energy of another person running (or struggling alongside with ya) helps to get you through it as well - They push, You push. You both get through. So regardless of all my runs on my own, I knew my mileage was low. And all the coaches said it. The "uh-ill" face came on when I said I knew I was somewhere between maybe 6-10 miles. Uh, *illface* you have to catch up.
yeah. i know.
Saturday I was determined. Mapped out a route with my boy Newms, a Coach who runs Chainlink, a basketball based program for kids, and headed out bright and early. (Cough, I woke up, choked down some peanut butter toast, laced up and made it out the house slightly later than expected. but i DID)
Ran up and over the Manhattan Bridge, Down Bowery over to 22nd st, Down the FDR to the track at the park above Houston, back up to 22nd and then back down the same way to Brooklyn.
I never really carry my phone with me on long runs, but going by myself into the city (not with a team with a bag watch) meant it was coming with as well. You never really know what'll happen...
Map My Run says 7.04 miles to the track. Round trip - 14+. Add the mile and a half on the track, and we've made it to 15.
At the very bottom right ... it says "Its not the Result, its the Release". Word to that.
Now, lets do it again.
I'm supposed to be doing 7 this eve with a friend in the hood... we'll see. Tomorrow, back to Central Park training. *Stay focused...
And I've started my $100/day challenge! To Donate:: http://www.runwithtfk.org/Member/PublicPage/1012
The running is important, but without the money, I'm running no where... Keep it coming!
later...

6:30 AM. Toast. Lacing em up and heading out.
It's OFFICIAL
the countdown has officially begun.
I've had it in my heart to run New York for a while. I hadn't taken the time to sign up with a team. I was nervous about training again. About having to fundraise.
But I've needed this.
Many of you watched the journey of the first marathon in 08 - San Francisco:
http://isrunssf.blogspot.com/
We raised over 5k and made it work. My friends and family couldn't make it out to witness it.
And here we go -- Back in training. Setting up to do 26 miles in a city I've loved my entire life.
I'm fundraising....
http://bit.ly/bW6xmN
But this is more than just the money. This is the story of a girl who's been challenged all year and has stepped up to the plate.
This is me hitting the pavement once again to prove to, above all, herself, that it can be done.
I'll see you in the streets!
